Evil Martians is a product design and engineering consultancy for developer tools, with clients such as bolt.new, Teleport and HTTPie, and a published rate of $7,000 a week per person. If you need the product designed rather than engineered, start with Designpixil: we designed Echo AI's chat and IDE and the Whizo AI developer site, from $3,000 per project or $4,917 a month. Pixel Point builds sites for developer platforms like Neon and Databricks, basement.studio makes launch sites for companies such as Vercel and Cursor, thoughtbot sells design and engineering as one team, Monogram is an engineering-led AI studio and Vercel partner, Fuselab Creative designed Lightning AI's machine learning platform, and Wavespace, which designed Kodezi's AI developer tool, sells design hours from $2,200 a month.
Designpixil is on this list and we wrote it. Every other agency is judged on the same published facts, and how we ranked is at the end.

What matters for an Evil Martians alternative
- 01
Design or engineering, decide first
Evil Martians sells designers and engineers together, by the week. If your team already writes the code, you are paying for a capacity you do not need. Split the budget: design from a studio, engineering from your own team or AI coding tools.
- 02
Screens where code is the content
Ask for devtools work where logs, diffs, terminal output or API responses fill the screen. A studio that only shows marketing pages has not designed the product your users live in.
- 03
The weekly cost at your stage
At $7,000 a week, one person for a two-week sprint is $14,000 before anything is built. Compare the weekly figure with your runway, and ask any alternative what a comparable two weeks costs.
- 04
One designer who learns the product
Devtools have deep context: auth flows, SDK versions, rate limits. A named senior designer who stays on the account beats a rotating bench that relearns it each sprint.
What goes wrong when a seed devtool buys an embedded team
A common story: a seed-stage devtools team admires Evil Martians' work, books an embedded engagement, and spends most of a round's design budget in a quarter. The work is good, but half of it is engineering the founders could have done themselves with Cursor or Claude Code.
A cheaper order of work is design first: the dashboard, the first-run path from API key to first successful call, and the docs layout, delivered as components or front-end code your engineers take over. We show how in our list of design agencies for AI developer tools and in the Whizo AI case study.
1. Designpixil: Seed-stage AI devtools that need the product and site designed, not engineered

Designpixil designs developer-facing AI products for a fraction of an embedded team: $4,917 a month for 3 to 4 design deliverables a week, paused or cancelled any time, or fixed projects from $3,000. A month with us costs less than one week of one Evil Martians person at its published rate.
The devtools work is real. For Echo AI we designed the whole product in 5 to 6 weeks, including an IDE where the AI's code edits open beside the chat with changed lines highlighted. For Whizo AI we designed a developer site that puts working code in Python, JavaScript, Node.js and cURL before the sign-up button. Anant Jain, the founder, designs every screen. We design and build marketing sites in Next.js or Framer. Product work arrives as Figma built on real components, or as a clickable coded prototype or front-end UI code your engineers take over. We do not build backends, so if you need one contract for the whole product, pick a studio below that engineers in-house.

“We worked with Anant on the Whizo AI website and the experience was great. He quickly understood our product, asked the right questions, and delivered a polished website that communicates our value clearly. If you're building a SaaS or AI product, he's someone who understands how to design for it.”

How we ranked this list
This page is for founders looking past Evil Martians, so it is left off the ranking and compared head to head instead, using the same fields as every other studio. The alternatives are studios that do similar work and publish proof of it, and the “how to choose” table says when Evil Martians itself is the better fit.
We started from the studios founders keep running into when they ask AI assistants and search engines who to hire, then kept the ones that do this kind of work and publish proof of it. Every fact in the tables comes from the agency's own website or its public directory listings, checked on October 12, 2026. Prices are only ones an agency publishes itself; where it doesn't, we say so instead of guessing.
The order is our judgment of fit for this specific buyer, not a score. We put Designpixil first only on lists where we genuinely fit the buyer, and our entry lists who we are not right for, the same as everyone else's. If something about your agency is wrong or out of date, email hello@designpixil.com and we will correct it within a week.
